A Global Webinar Series on "Gender-Responsive Criminal Justice and Prison Reform"
Thailand Institute of Justice (TIJ) and the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) are organizing this series of webinars to create a platform for discussion on current challenges faced by women in conflict with the law and sharing of tools, experience, lessons learned and good practices. The aim is to promote gender-responsive approaches, both in reducing the spread of COVID-19 in prisons and in relation to longer-term criminal justice and prison reform efforts. The series is also expected to identify and adjust priorities for criminal justice and prison systems in the ongoing Decade of Action in order to achieve SDG 5 (gender equality), SDG 16 (access to justice for all) and SDG 17 (building global partnerships).
KEY PROJECT The Bangkok Rules Training
With an aim to promote a substantive and sustainable improvement of the treatment of women prisoners, Thailand Institute of Justice, in consultation with international practitioners and experts in the field of corrections, has developed the training on the Management of Women Prisoners for Senior Correctional Staff in the ASEAN Region, or the Bangkok Rules Training. The training programme aims to provide guidance and practical knowledge on translating the Bangkok Rules into practice. Using an Action Plan format, the training will assist the participants in designing a framework for implementing the Bangkok Rules and other international standards.
KEY PROJECT Project j
"Project j" aims to employ innovative means to create justice, including the use of technology and human-center approach, in order to ensure that the creation of justice can start from everywhere and everyone.
In order for Project j to employ innovative means to create justice, the project is subdivided into three main components as the following,
1. j Education (j-ED)
J Education employs design thinking, an innovative thinking process, to ingrain the sense of justice and culture of lawfulness among the Thailand Institute of Justice’s staff, the institute’s partners, university students, and youth. The goal of this is to invest in human capital, especially in youth, to be justice innovators, to expose them to justice issues and to empower them to take charge in enhancing justice.
2. j Experiment (jX):
J Experiment creates innovations for justice by adapting the existing technologies and innovations to enhance and ease access to justice. This scope of work also elevates the potential of the institute’s existing partners, police officers, judges, entrepreneurs, to name but a few, and utilizes their expertise to innovate justice, exploring unconventional ways towards achieving justice.
3. j Content:
J Content creates and fosters knowledge resources about justice innovation, an area of knowledge that is still left unexplored in Thailand. This scope of work researches case studies about justice and innovations, both domestically and internationally in order to produce various forms of knowledge for the public. Playbooks, board games, translated books regarding justice innovation and the rule of law will be produced and shared.
KEY PROJECT RoLD Program
The Rule of Law and Development Program (RoLD Program) signifies collaborative efforts between the Thailand Institute of Justice (TIJ) and the Institute for Global Law and Policy (IGLP) at Harvard Law School in bringing together young scholars and policymakers to learn from like–minded peers about the intricacies of the rule of law in contemporary contexts. As an integral part of the RoLD Program, the TIJ Workshop for Emerging Leaders on the Rule of Law & Policy seeks to strengthen human capacities to formulate and develop a true understanding of how the rule of law operates within our multi–faceted society. Apart from the TIJ Workshop, the RoLD Program is comprised of the flagship Executive Program on the rule of law and development, the RoLD in Action or the application of the rule of law into real life cases, and the TIJ Public Forum.
