Specialized Training Programme for Staff at Malang Women’s Prison, Indonesia
From 10th to 26th November 2020, TIJ and UNODC will be leading a 3-week online ‘Specialized Training Programme for Staff at Malang Women’s Prison, Indonesia’ to increase awareness of the United Nations Rules for the Treatment of Women Prisoners and Non-custodial Measures for Women Offenders (the Bangkok Rules). With 31 participants and 19 international and domestic experts from 7 countries, this e-training will provide an in-depth understanding of the gender sensitive needs of women prisoners, with a focus on their health, security and rehabilitation.
Over the next 3 weeks, staff will learn about international standards and norms on the treatment of prisoners such as the Bangkok Rules and the Nelson Mandela Rules. By dividing the participants into small groups based on their area of work, they will learn through a mix of targeted lectures and group activities, all conducted remotely. The training has been designed to improve their knowledge as well as specific, actionable, and practical skills that they can use in their existing roles in prison.
This training is the result of a joint scoping mission undertaken by TIJ and UNODC in January 2020 to understand the staff training needs in Malang Women’s Prison.
