On Friday, 19 September 2025, Dr. Nathee Chitsawang, Advisor to the Thailand Institute of Justice (TIJ), together with Miss Chontit Chuenurah, Director of the Office for the Bangkok Rules and Treatment of Offenders, and the team, was honored to welcome Mr. Yamamoto Takayoshi, Counsellor (Director) of the Correction Bureau, Ministry of Justice, Japan, along with other delegates, as well as distinguished guests from the Embassy of Japan in Thailand and the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), at the TIJ Headquarters.
The visit began with a special exhibition, “Through a Different Lens”, celebrating 15 years of the Bangkok Rules and shedding light on the lives of women in conflict with the law. This was followed by a tour of Restart Academy, TIJ’s initiative supporting the reintegration of formerly incarcerated individuals, where both sides exchanged inspiring perspectives. In the afternoon, discussions developed into an enriching meeting. On behalf of TIJ, Ms. Chontit Chuenurah presented an overview of the institute’s initiatives and activities and shared insights on the global implementation of the Bangkok Rules, while the distinguished delegation presented good practices in the treatment of female prisoners in Japan.
This visit marked a valuable opportunity for TIJ and the Correction Bureau of Japan to exchange insights and strengthen collaboration in promoting the Bangkok Rules, advancing our shared commitment to rights-based and gender-sensitive standards for the treatment of women prisoners.
