TIJ-UNODC held a colloquium Development-led Crime Prevention

A regional colloquium on “Empowering Vulnerable Communities and Women for Sustainable Development” was held by the Thailand Institute of Justice (TIJ), partnered with the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC). The colloquium proposed the implementation of the development-led crime prevention approach and promoted an inclusive society to preemptively protect the society from drugs and crime. The discourse cited two stellar examples: the Women’s Correctional Institution in Chiang Mai and the Doi Tung Development Project.

After the study trip to the Women’s Correctional Institution in Chiang Mai and the Doi Tung Development Project, led by HRH Princess Bajraitiyabha Mahidol, between the 25th and 26th of January, 2018, the esteemed participants of the trip attended a regional colloquium on “Empowering Vulnerable Communities and Women for Sustainable Development” at the Le Meridian Hotel in Chiang Rai. The objective of the colloquium was to provide opportunities for discussion and the exchange of ideas, experiences, and the lessons learned, especially concerning aiding the vulnerable members of the society, such as women prisoners and local communities, through initiatives. It also facilitated discussion on some of the promising strategies guided by the “development-led” concept as a way to enhance efforts in the treatment of offenders and regarding crime prevention.
