TIJ Hosted the Consultative Group Meeting for the 2nd ACCPCJ
The Consultative Group Meeting, held on the 13-14 October 2019 in Phuket, Thailand, was organized by the Thailand Institute of Justice (TIJ), the designated coordinator for the preparations of the 2nd ASEAN Conference on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice. The meeting was attended by ASEAN Member States’ representatives from ASEAN Senior Law Officials’ Meeting (ASLOM), Senior Officials’ Meeting for the ASEAN Socio-Cultural Community (SOCA), Senior Officials Meeting on Transnational Crime (SOMTC) and the ASEAN Secretariat.
The meeting extensively exchanged views and discussed theme and substantive issues of the 2nd ACCPCJ. The consultation highlighted the importance of cross-pillar, cross-sectoral coordination among ASEAN pillars: the ASEAN Political-Security Community (APSC), the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) and the ASEAN Socio-Cultural Community (ASCC)to enhance the ASEAN Declaration on the Culture of Prevention for a Peaceful, Inclusive, Resilient, Healthy and Harmonious Society. Additionally, the meeting recognized the importance of cybercrime as a common pressing issue, both from the prevention and suppression perspectives.
In conclusion, the meeting agreed on the theme of the 2nd ACCPCJ: “Promoting the ASEAN Culture of Prevention for a Collaborative and Innovative Justice for All.” The substantive issues to be discussed at the 2nd ACCPCJ will be centered around cybercrime – a major crime and justice challenge for ASEAN. Relevant aspects of access to justice and justice reform will also be reflected in the agenda-setting. The conference will feature a public-private partnership session and the youth forum.
Thailand will host the 2nd ACCPCJ in February 2020.
