“Community service and probation for women: A study in Kenya”

From 29 September – 5 October 2016, Ms. Chontit Chuenurah, Chief of Implementation of the Bangkok Rules and Treatment of Offenders Programme, together with TIJ research team, attended the presentation of the report on “Community service and probation for women: A study in Kenya” at InterContinental Hotel, Nairobi, Republic of Kenya.


This research project is implemented by Penal Reform International (PRI), in partnership with Kenya Probation and Aftercare Service, and funded by TIJ. It serves as a pioneer project in designing and developing a gender sensitive approach in community services and probation orders. The finding from this project will be used, in the next step of the project, for the adaptation of tools and guidance for probation officers in working with female offenders.


More than 60 participants attended the report launch event. The opening remarks were given by Mr. Micah Powon, Principal Secretary of Correctional Services, Ms. Alison Hannah, Executive Director of PRI, and Hon. Justice Luka Kimaru, Chairman of Community Service Order Board. The research finding was presented by Dr. Sarah Kinyanjui, project’s lead researcher.
