The World Justice Project (WJP) competition is now opening

World Justice Project (WJP) is calling for proposals on projects and initiatives to strengthen the rule of law that may win the “World Justice Challenge” competition. Launched on November 5th, 2013, the competition is open to all individuals, organizations, and entities from any country, and the submission deadline is on January 15th, 2014.

The WJP believes that everyone – regardless of who they are, what they do, or where they live – can advance the rule of law in their own community. The WJP also hopes that the “World Justice Challenge” will provide the right opportunity for individuals living and working closest to where problems are located to create and test new ideas that can bolster the rule of law.

Approximately 10 grantees will be selected by the Selection Panel. The selected projects will be supported by the WJP through $15,000 to $25,000 seed grants, connections with key individuals and institutions within its global network, and increased visibility for the initiatives through media coverage.

In 2012 – 2013, 12 grantees were selected, representing some of the most innovative social justice efforts underway around the world. One project from Thailand was also selected, which is “Establishing an effective detention monitoring structure in the Deep South of Thailand,” implemented by Cross Cultural Foundation with the partnerships of the Association for the Prevention of Torture and Muslim Attorney Center Foundation. The goal of this project is to strengthen civil society organizations in the deep southern region of Thailand by preventing torture and ill treatment of detainees in the detention facilities of the Deep South.

The World Justice Project, an independent non-profit organization, develops communities of opportunity and equity by advancing the rule of law worldwide. The WJP engages leaders in countries across the globe and from all work disciplines to advance the rule of law. Thailand Institute of Justice, or TIJ, guided by the conviction that the true community of justice can be realized by the firm adherence to human rights principles and respect for the rule of law, is committed to strengthening the criminal justice systems by the promotion of knowledge creation and knowledge sharing with regards to the implementation of international standards and norms in the field of crime prevention and criminal justice.

TIJ activities aimed at promoting the rule of law include knowledge sharing among domestic and international organizations. On November 15th, 2013, TIJ hosted “The Bangkok Dialogue on the Rule of Law – Investing in the Rule of Law, Justice and Security for the Post-2015 Development Agenda”, to advance the knowledge of the rule of law. From this event, TIJ has received great supports from many countries. This thus can be considered a significant beginning of strengthening the rule of law in the global level.
